  1. "Patrilineal societies should be more likely than matrilineal societies to give greater emphasis to male deities than to female deities" (41).Carroll, Michael P. - The sex of our gods, 1979 - 2 Variables

This study tests several hypothesis about predictors of male or female gods. Results suggest a relationship between relative emphasis on female deities and rule of descent.

  2. "Societies characterized by the presence of an organization that tries to coordinate politically autonomous subgroups should give greater relative emphasis to male deities than other societies" (42).Carroll, Michael P. - The sex of our gods, 1979 - 2 Variables

This study tests several hypothesis about predictors of male or female gods. Results suggest a relationship between relative emphasis on female deities and rule of descent.

  3. "The more the father acts as the parental disciplinarian in a society, the more likely is that society to emphasize male deities" (44).Carroll, Michael P. - The sex of our gods, 1979 - 2 Variables

This study tests several hypothesis about predictors of male or female gods. Results suggest a relationship between relative emphasis on female deities and rule of descent.

  4. "The more the young males in a society are disciplined by males, the more likely is that society to emphasize male deities" (45).Carroll, Michael P. - The sex of our gods, 1979 - 2 Variables

This study tests several hypothesis about predictors of male or female gods. Results suggest a relationship between relative emphasis on female deities and rule of descent.

  5. Matrilineality will be positively associated with the presence of the patterns discussed by Levi-Strauss (295)Carroll, Michael P. - Applying Heider's theory of cognitive balance to Claude Levi-Strauss, 1973 - 2 Variables

Heider's theory of cognitive balance is applied to Levi-Strauss' discussion of the sentiment relations existing among four kin roles.

  6. "Viewed in relation to the presence or absence of unilineal kin groups so defined [matrilineal and patrilineal descent], degree of drunkenness yields a strong negative correlation of -.67 which is highly significant" (55)Field, Peter B. - A new cross-cultural study of drunkenness, 1962 - 2 Variables

This book chapter builds on Horton's 1943 psychoanalytical study of drunkenness. The author tests an overall theory that drunkenness, which facilitates personal and uninhibited interactions, is more acceptable, and therefore prevalent, in societies with loose, rather than rigid, social relationships. Indicators of social rigidity, such as strict socialization or male dominance through patrilocality, are tested for relationships to drunkenness.

  7. "[There is a] relationship between the agents of socialization and the presence or absence of unilineal descent groups and between [the latter] and experiences at the first stage of puberty [that is extrusion and/or brother-sister avoidance]" (71)Cohen, Yehudi A. - The transition from childhood to adolescence: cross-cultural studies of ini..., 1964 - 3 Variables

The theoretical concern of this work is with different types of liability that societies emphasize in their legal systems and how that plays out in understanding the transition from childhood to adolescence as well as variation in incest taboos.

  8. Purely unilocal residence (without a significant alternative postmarital residence pattern) will be associated with the formation of a unilineal descent group (84-86).Korotayev, Andrey V. - Unilocal residence and unilineal descent: a reconsideration, 2004 - 2 Variables

This study focuses on the development of unilineal descent, reviewing previous theories and testing additional factors to explain the relationship between unilineal descent and unilocal residence. Results suggest four key factors leading to a low association between these two variables: insufficient alternatives to unilocal residence rule, instability of communal composition, absence of sedentary settlement pattern, and small average community size. A model linking all variables from the paper is presented.

  9. "There should be an observed correlation between a relatively high prevalence of homosexuality and the presence of an institutionalized police force, but this correlation should disappear once degree of father contact is introduced as a control" (264).Carroll, Michael P. - Freud on homosexuality and the super-ego: some cross-cultural tests, 1978 - 3 Variables

This study tests predictions of homosexuality. Results suggest that homosexuality is significantly associated with father-son contact.

  10. Matrilineality and double descent will be associated with women's overt political power (70).Low, Bobbi S. - Sex, coalitions, and politics in preindustrial societies, 1992 - 3 Variables

This article investigates possible correlates of women’s overt political power in a cross-cultural sample. Rule of descent—specifically, matrilineal or double descent— is the only factor the author found to be associated with women’s overt political power. Several other factors, including sex ratio, subsistence type, contribution to subsistence, and political system, are not associated. The author also includes a discussion of political activity among chimpanzees, as well as a brief ethnographic summary of several societies in which women have political power.
